Child Abandonment Crisis in Africa
The two young siblings stand outside their makeshift home — eyes filled with uncertainty, hearts burdened by questions no child should ever have to ask. What will tomorrow bring? Who will care for us now?
Recently, their single mother abandoned them in a timber kiosk shelter they call home — the in poor condition and unsafe housing whose landlord is evicting them from over unpaid rent. The whereabouts of the father and lately mother of the young residents in one of the poor communities suburbs of Kampala, Uganda’s capital, remain unknown.
The children only family ordeal has been brought to PAF’s attention by a concerned community member.Actual reasons as to why the young boys’ parents chose to desert them are still public guesses. However, PAF is working tirelessly to trace the parents and ensure the siblings safety, education, healthy and restoration of their hope and divinity.

Nonetheless, the unfortunate story isn’t unique. According to a Kampala City Council Authority – KCCA 2023 report, more than 30 under 8 year old children are abandoned every month in Kampala alone. The escalating child abandonment and neglect predicament is ensnaring and wasting young and future generations of sub-saharan Africa as a whole.
The causes of abandonment and neglect of millions of Africa’s heritage right from at birth moments vary; Extreme poverty, diseases eg the prevalent HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, social moral decay, unwanted traumatic pregnancies, displacements due to persistent and recurring civil wars and natural disasters.
The above, among other factors continually place demand, most times vain demand on society for at most; basic needs of life that deserted children usually require.
Being abandoned keeps forcing children into making cruel and tragic choices that expose them to lifetime severe and undoable damages, and at worse premature deaths. Thus, endlessly keeping Africa into a cycle of the same crisis. This is the very foundation of PAF’s compassion for, and passionate commitment to not only rescuing, resettling, educating and training and giving hope to vulnerable children, but also to addressing the very root causes of child abandonment in Africa. That’s through it’s health, education humanitarian relief, social -economic development and advocacy outreach projects throughout Africa with support by UNICEF and in partnership with like mind organisations.
